A New Year to Resolve Last Year's Resolutions...

Every year we come up with our resolutions for the new year in hopes of creating a better life for ourselves but many of us don't make any progress throughout the upcoming year to resolve our problems. This is primarily because we don't make any effort to do so. We simply hope that our problems will fix themselves or that our goals will be achieved by themselves.
Unfortunately, life doesn't work that way. Just like most things in life, you have to put the work in to get the job done. Saying or writing down what you hope to accomplish in the new year is not going to cut it. It's the first step in reaching your goals, but have you figured out how you are going to accomplish them? What will it take to lose those 15 pounds or double your income?

Once you've figured out "the how," it's time to get to work. If doubling your income is first on your list of goals, focus on that. Your "how" can be to get a new job, start your own business or invest. If you think getting a new job is the best way for you to double your income, you'll need to set goals within this process to achieve the ultimate goal. Maybe you'll need to apply for "x" number of jobs to get "x" amount of interviews while you attend "x" amount of networking events. Once you've been offered this new job, you may need to negotiate your salary in order to get your desired income.

Whatever steps you need to take to accomplish your goals for the new year, remember to keep yourself motivated. It may take a lot of work and a lot of time to achieve them. So if you don't keep yourself motivated, you're likely to give up and then another year has gone by and you're in the same position you were in last year.

Some ways to keep yourself motivated are to reward yourself for making it to a certain point. Maybe you have 5 interviews lined up, you made it to the final round or you get to choose between two job offers. These are things to celebrate. You've made it this far, so even if things don't work out and you have to do more work to achieve your goal, you're recognizing yourself for your efforts and accomplishments in going after your goal.

So don't just think of what you want for your life in the new year, make an action plan and do the work in order to accomplish your goals. Don't continue to be the person who always dreams of a better life but never gets there because she never tried to do so. Do the work to live the life you want and don't let your fear of failing get in the way because it's true about what they say: "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Figure out what you truly want to accomplish next year and makes sure it gets done, but above all else, have a Happy New Year!

This is so me! Thank you for writing this, I've definitely had struggle in accomplishing my goals for the new year and it's mostly due to
Lack of motivation to strive to reach them. I start off strong in January and then I lose focus after that. I'm gonna try some if your tips this year and see how it goes!

I definitely agree with Amber. I barely even make it past January though lol! I think I need to make more realistic goals and really figure out "the how" this year.
