Of course you can view it as a way to celebrate that we are thankful for our family members and food but what are we giving? In my family everyone cooks so we are giving our time to make food for each other but I know in many families, they don't cook or the mom does all the cooking. So other than family and food, I still don't get it so I think the bigger focus on this holiday should be to give to others because we are thankful that we can afford to do so.
When I was in organizations, we would find ways to give by either creating baskets of food for families less fortunate for the holiday or we would pass them out directly. Although this is great, there are so many other ways to give for the holiday that don't involve turkey baskets. We could volunteer to help organizations, do community service projects or just donate to certain causes, among other things.
It is important to realize that this isn't something we should do once a year but if Thanksgiving is everything that it should be, we should celebrate the holiday by giving back instead of having a feast and then discussing what we're thankful for because I've learned that in order to be truly thankful, you must be a giving person.
